Artist Biography

1865 - 1946

John Jay Baumgartner was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on January 24, 1865. He settled in San Francisco in 1894 and for over 50 years was an active member of the local art scene. A self-taught painter, his subjects were mostly landscapes, scenes of the San Francisco Bay area, the rugged northern coast, and pastoral scenes with figures. He died in San Francisco on October 18, 1946. Member: Bohemian Club; San Francisco Art Ass'n.
