For over 50 years, Edan Milton Hughes researched and collected Early California Art as a true labor of love. His three-volume "Artists in California, 1786-1940" has become the standard reference book on the subject. More than just a resource for collectors and sellers, the biographies within it present thousands of human interest stories that illustrate the history of California through the colorful lives of the artists who lived and worked there.

Until his passing earlier this year, Edan Hughes collected some of the most well-regarded Early California artists. Many outstanding pieces from his collection were bequeathed to the Crocker Museum in Sacramento, California, some on view in a gallery there that bears his name.

For a limited time, this website will offer for sale many of the paintings that Edan Hughes collected over the course of his life. Reasonable offers will be considered. Please enjoy browsing through the images and artist biographies found within.
